Twelve representative fuse assemblies were subjected to these tests.
A125 V ac, 60 Hzsupply source was connected in series with a calibrated circuit and a 20 A time-delay fuse. The calibrated circuit was adjusted to supply a test current of 200 A at a power factor of 0.70 to 0.80 without the assembly under test or the time-delay fuse in the circuit.
1. The blades of the device were inserted into a receptacle and cotton was placed around the body of the device, not in contact with the face. Each device was prepared by removing 0.5 inch (13mm) of the insulation from the end of each circuit conductor and twist to join the conductors. The circuit was energized and the test current was monitored until the fuse opened, causing the current to stop flowing. The test was repeated on two of the five remaining assemblies. The test was then repeated at a current of 1000 A on the three remaining assemblies.
2. The method above was repeated on 6 new samples except there was six (6) feet of cord beyond the protective-device enclosure.
